Domain Name Giveaway Contest

I’m a junkie, a domain name junkie. I collect domain names like some people collect baseball cards. Over the past couple years I have purchased about 80 or more domain names all with good intentions. I have built many of them into good sites that have a steady stream of readers and make a few bucks. Many of them sit in a GoDaddy graveyard and need to be given a better home than mine. I am going to be giving them away to my readers and the rules are simple. I will be giving away 5 domain names a month until all of them are gone. Some will be given away individually and others I’ll create a group that will be given out.

Why do I have so many domain names.

Other than the fact that I have an addiction, I really got these domain names with the best intentions. The plan always was to use these domain names to either write in like a blog or put a basic site together to generate some small amount of revenue. I thought of domain names like a stock or a piece of virtual real estate. I would buy it and build it up a bit then see what happened. The truth is that as much as I wanted to work on all of these, I have big dreams that were brought down by reality. Then between Problogger and Flipping Easy, I got an idea that I could offer these out as gifts to my readers.

Controlling the addiction.

I realized I had a problem when I found out I had a personal account manager at GoDaddy. I found out when he called me to introduce himself and see if I had any questions or other domains I wanted to purchase in bulk for a discount. It was, and is a bit embarrassing to think I have collected so many domain names that it required an account manager. I have several sites that I actively manage and I’ll go into details on those later, for now I want to liquidate my excess domain name inventory.

Stopping the impulsive buying of domain names could be related to having heroin withdrawals. I would get an idea for a great site punch in GoDaddy, check the domain name availability and catch myself during checkout and shut down the computer. There have been a few relapses but I am working on it. I have been kicking around just letting them all expire but where’s the sport in that. Some of the domain names I am going to give away expire in February and others throughout the year. This is a subset of my domain names that I will be giving away. Like I said they are nothing special but hopefully you can turn them into something if you win. If nothing else you will be helping me away from my domain addiction. Most of these domain are empty, leading to nothing and some of them I have put up a basic page and added some content.

Contest Rules

If you want the domain names up for grabs all you need to do is leave a comment on the post related to that set of names. One comment per person is allowed. If you want additional entries to the contest you can get them by providing backlinks to the post by writing about them on your blog or other means of creating a backlink.

At the end of the time frame for the contest, I will pick a random comment using random.org to choose a comment/trackback number and voila you are the winner.

I will transfer the domain name through GoDaddy to the winner within 48 hours. All I will need from the winner is some basic information for the transfer like Full Name, Address, and email account, phone number…and it’s done

So the first order of business is this. Is this even appealing to you? I know there must be other domain name junkies out there that would jump at the idea of getting a free domain name or twenty but I don’t know if they read this site. What domain names should I offer up first?

    Random question from loyal reader:

How do you get your GoDaddy registered domains to point to your server space? Is this done on the GoDaddy side or the Web Hosting side? Appreciate any feedback directed to my email address (the web has been fruitless for answering this question, atleast in a way I can understand).

    Matt,
This is done through Godaddy. Select the domain you want to point to another server and click on nameservers. Change the nameservers to that of your host/server where you will be hosting your site. Hope this helps.

The best thing that I like about having these spare domain names is, getting someone that would like to buy them.

I have had domains that I got off eBay, usually at a good price.

I turn some of them out into content based sites. Most of them end up on parked accounts on Sedo.

What is nice is when I get one for 10 bucks, and sell it for $300.
