Running on empty

greenThe good news is that this week has flown by. Bad news is I can’t seem to remember what happened from Monday to today. No, not amnesia, just not taking a break long enough to relax.

SBC internet service is a sham. I’ve been without a network connection at the house for a few days now. It’s worse now than before the technician came out to “fix” things. So nightly I’ve been sitting in front of my three monitors running tests and checking configurations on my modem and Linksys router to see what could be blocking access. I have it up for a few minutes at a time on what I call ‘life support’ and then it mysteriously dies again. A very humbling experience since I am usually the go to guy with computer problems. Networks are not my forte. I’ve wanted to throw the router out the window a few times but caught myself in the process. :) I ended up buying a new wireless router from FRY’s and seeing if that would help. All I had to do was plug it in and everything started right up. Networks must be like old cars. If you fix one thing then something else is bound to break under the pressure.

Another headache is South Bay Appliance out of San Jose. We used our home waranty to get some broken appliances fixed. The oven and the dishwasher. They came out a month ago and got the information they needed and said I would get a call in a few days to schedule a time to make the repair. Then we never heard back from them. I had called and was told that all of the parts were in and scheduled an appointment and then when the technician arrived, the oven coil was wrong and they never got the part for the dishwasher. Grrr. Again, no follow up from South Bay Appliance and I called them to see what the deal was. Turns out they have another part for the oven and they ‘think’ it’s the right one and they dishwasher is not repairable so it will need to be replaced but they need to fill out a form to the home warranty company to get the ball rolling. Do you think they have done that? Nope. I called today to confirm their incompetence and they claim they have no record of my issue. WTF. What kind of system are they using to keep records? Sounds like they still use stone tablets. So another call to the home warranty company was made to send over another copy of the form we need filled out to get the replacement. Are these things supposed to take a month to fix??? Why don’t service companies have better customer service?

Things are picking up at Coverity. Setting up demos and sending proposals. The process seems to work itself through the cycle. The people here are great. Fun peeps. Everyone is working but they have time to play the occasional prank and send IMs with links to interesting videos, like the one I added today.

Yesterday Alexzander went to the emergency room. Scary. He got a nasty bump on his head from falling off a small chair when Nikolia grabbed it. Sounds retarded, but it happens. I was being told not to worry. He’s not my baby. But I can’t help it.

Tonight I am going to a place in the city to see my boss play in his band. I’ve heard his music. Sounds good. I’m looking forward to hanging out with the crew outside of the office. That’s when you get to see how they really are. So it will be a late night tonight. As much as I hate that, it should be fun.

I can’t wait for Saturday morning.
