Why is finding a job so difficult?

So, I had a couple offers last week that I had to make a decision on. I asked all my questions, got most of the answers I was looking for and then started running the numbers to make sure the bills would get paid if things went south for a month or two. Even though I know my skills and talents, I even have a bad month every now and then. That being said, sometimes it’s not always my fault, maybe the company missed a release or had a bug develop that cost some sales. Either way, I had to make sure that a dip in sales would not put my house or family in too much risk.
I put together a matrix with all the financial data broken out between base salary and commission and started looking at the overall picture and found that one of the opportunities would crush me if I wasn’t hitting at least 90% of my goal every month. God forbid I hit 60% for some reason, I would have to foreclose on the house. So after explaining this to the hiring manager, I was told they couldn’t do anything for me and I walked away.
The second opportunity looked much better but I can’t get a realistic view of what the sales people are bringing in a month since most of the crew is newer and the veteran sales group is making all the money. So it came down to my gut having to decide if I would be able to close a few deals a month out the gate. Since I think I can do anything, that wasn’t more than a passing thought, but in the event that I am wrong (It happens sometimes) it would hurt, but I would be able to survive. The drive is a bit further and spending 3+ hours on the road is not something I would look forward to. They said they would make concessions. They are actually being very accommodating and I appreciate that. I am still continuing to discuss the opportunity with them. Like I mentioned in an earlier post. Even if things didn’t work out, their product/service is outstanding.
I hate being out of a job. I’d much rather be closing deals and collecting a paycheck than searching for a company that needs quality sales people.
I am still on the fence about the second offer. I need to just make a decision and move forward.
