I am a Domain Name Junkie! Since making a conscious effort to be more organized I have been doing well on a professional level. Keeping all of my future appointments handy and blocking out time for research and getting the simple tasks done that will make sure my meetings are focused and deliver positive results. I have brought this format into my personal life to some extent and this is more like a work in progress since business tasks are easy to schedule and personal ones typically were getting done when they became a pressing issue and I found or made the time to complete them.
I had a moment of self reflection and realized I had a problem. Not that I am addicted to heroin or need to go to Alcoholics Anonymous but I love my internet and I love my blogs. I should be embarrassed of the number of domain names I own. I tend to start on a new internet idea and then it slips to other pressing issues and I end up forgetting about that ‘great new idea’ for a business venture or blog that was on the top of my priorities.
I wanted to spend some time focusing on my addiction to domain names and see where I stood in reality and see what could be done. Part of dealing with an addiction is to first acknowledge it and then the path to recovery can begin. I started this downward spiral when I got back from Bosnia in 2001. I bought this domain www.kokasexton.com and started piecing together all of my letters and writing blog posts that I wante to share with family friends and the world. That turned into a secondary domain called SOCOM Sales that was and still is a collection of news and insights by me on the business world and giving sales professionals a focal point for tips and sales strategies. The name came about because SOCOM is the acronymn for “Special Operations Command” and I saw my professional life as a Special Operations mission. I believe that by searching for and soaking up the best information available in your field of study you can make better decisions and be better than the guy standing next to you. In turn, being the best in your field. Seemed to make sense to me at the time.
I should have stopped there but by then I was hooked. I was still active in the military and I had a deep passion for world politics and military events and started TacOps Security. This site has made many changes over time and now just serves as a news site that aggregates stories from around the world on military related topics.
But the addiction was in full swing by now and I ended up buying many more domains. Too many. 32 to be exact. (I told you I had a problem!)
I have domains on a myriad of topics. All bought with great intentions for financial gain or spreading my interests to the world. I put myself in DNA (Domain Name Addiction) and put all the buying of URLs to an end. [That being said, I really want to buy www.domainnameaddition.com now.]
GoDaddy.com makes this too easy for addicts like me. I can buy and manage all of my domain names in one window easily and they actually encourage me to buy more domains by sending me emails on a regular basis with coupons for cheap name registrations. Who can turn down spending $1.99 for a new domain name? I obviously cannot! So I have put myself into GoDaddy Domain Rehab and have put together a plan to wean myself off of this disastrous path.
Here is an overview of the plan.
- Get a list of domains I own and figure out “what the hell they actually are supposed to do”.
- Sell, consolidate or use them in a way that keeps me occupied and serving a purpose.
- Do not buy anymore domain names until step 2 is completed!!
OK. That’s the overview. I have more steps written down, but you get the idea.
Yes…I know. WTF was I thinking?!? But in my defense, I am not the only one out there with this problem. In my internet travels, I have come across people with 200+ domain names under their command that do ABSOLUTELY nothing. I know I have a problem, they refuse to admit it!
So the long hard task of figuring out what to do with these domains is the real task I need to figure out. If you have any ideas, let me know.
