I started with Twitter since I seem to live in it. I did some tweaking on the @paragonamerica profile, it had about 6 followers at the time and started feeding in some updates and links to news about the company. Basic stuff but I had to start somewhere.  300 tweets later I am at 325 followers and growing a little every day. Now I would be happier if I had 3000 but I wont complain about some modest growth. There are some contributing factors like the company already maintaining the corporate @paragonsoftware profile. There is a strategy to having multiple profiles for the company, I’ll explain that in another post.

In the @paragonamerica profile I focus on updates for our corporate line of software and industry news that applies to the storage market. Since it feels like I have 4 other jobs with the company, social media is not a full focus of mine, I am glad to see that the little bits of interaction I am giving are beginning to gain some awareness. I’ve found some of our partners profiles and connected with them and many others that have some connection to our company or the industry.

Facebook

The second platform I started working on was the Paragon Software Facebook page. Again, there was already a corporate page but was fairly dormant and I started slowly building a group within the new profile. The numbers between Facebook and Twitter are very close, I should make an effort to see how big the overlap is. That would be interesting to know. I was given a bit of a boost when Jackson Chung of Make Use Of -@makeuseof helped promote a giveaway we were running to his enormous following. Now we have regular giveaways and promotion with them and it has turned out to be a great relationship between the companies. Still the following on Facebook could be better. If there was a magic bullet to this, I think I would have found it. So with the time I can spend on it, slow and steady it will have to be.

Wordpress Blog

I believe that any companies social media presence hinges on a blog of some kind. Even ifs it’s just a section of the company website that has updated news. On a more complex level having a full blog platform like Wordpress helps with SEO and a hundred other things. I started a company blog on Wordpress.com. since the company did not have a blog set up, this was the quickest way to be up and running with hardly any resources.I started off with just a few hundred hits a day. Mostly from pushing the blog content out on the other social media platforms. The blog was sorta under the radar of the company since the last thing I wanted to do was call any attention to a blog that was never going to generate any awareness or garner any results. It was a steady climb, then in March we got a post linked to from several other blogs and the numbers jumped. Well, so much for being under the radar. The decision was made to host a Wordpress blog on our company network and now we have blog.paragon-software.com.

There was some break in the stats while the site was moved but it’s clear that the blog is getting a lot more exposure than our other social media profiles. There are many explanations for this. Ive been working with the other regions especially in Europe on how to pull even more traffic into the blog. The site is very functional, I could make it a little ‘prettier’ but it’s nice. I’m comfortable with Wordpress as a platform (That’s what this blog is too) but I don’t know all the backend stuff that could really make it shine. Once someone starts talking .htaccess
I’m lost. But I don’t need that to get the blog becoming the central hub for the community, which is the plan.

Paragon Software Group Facebook

I setup a Facebook page for the company and kicked it off with a contest for a free 1TB hard drive and some other prizes. All you need to do for a chance at winning is become a fan. Too easy. Facebook will be the platform to share updates and promotions as well as push out news to fans that want to follow us. I am getting more familiar with Facebook Markup Language or FBML to the rest of you geeks. There are some great examples of Facebook Fan sites that I am using for inspiration. Stay tuned for updates.

Paragon Software Group America Twitter

Every company should have a profile on Twitter. Just about every article on my Corporate Social Media Reading List that talked about Twitter made this point very clear. even as a passive user Twitter can be beneficial. The best companies on Twitter are doing more proactive updates and being a voice for their company and customers. That’s the plan with the Paragon America profile. I’ll be putting out news about storage, server virtualization and retweeting news and tweets from our partners.

Paragon Software Blog

Having a Facebook and Twitter profile is great but the company needed a place to hold key information and a platform to spread news outside of 140 characters. To do this we needed a Paragon Software blog. I chose Wordpress as the platform since I already know how to use it and they are by far the easiest and most customizable blogging platform to use. I started by putting in some of thje latest press about the company and have several new posts planned covering our products and the industry. Subscribe to the Paragon Software Blog RSS feed. Running this blog on Wordpress servers has some limitations with customization but for the purpose of the site, they offer more than enough for now.

Knowing that getting into social media and doing it right was needed, especially for a technology company, someone had to step up to the keyboard. That someone was me. I created the Paragon Software Twitter profile and a Paragon Software Facebook page and started looking for inspiration. I know my way around the popular sites. I’ve grown a healthy network of friends and followers. What I needed was a crash course on corporate social media tips so I did what any self respecting geek would do and typed it into Google.

What I found were a collection of sites and posts that spoke to my social media needs. I’m not Howard Stephen Berg but I could probably learn a few things from him. After scouring the internet for information, this is the super list of social media posts that I came up with as a reading list.

Between getting my breaking news updates and talking to friends, Twitter has become a staple in my life. I want to share some of the best Twitter applications that I use on a regular basis.

TwitterFon
TwitterFon is a simple, clean, easy to use, and is a superfast Twitter client for your iPhone and iPod Touch.

TwitterFon is focused on ease of use and 80% of your daily Twitter tasks, such as see your friends/replies/messages timeline, see favorites, and send/reply a tweet. You can also search tweets, get twitter trends, upload photos to twitpic.com, and update your location information.

TwitterFon is my primary iPhone Twitter application.

Monitter

Monitter is one of my favorite voyeuristic Twitter applications. So simple that a 5 yr old can use it and yet powerful enough to show me who is talking about any topic anywhere in the world. I use Monitter to see what is being said in my city by specifying the distance of search and I open it up for every conversation when I look for information about news topics or when i want to see what is being said about the company I work for.

Twirl

I have a few different Twitter profiles. Instead of signing into each one individually online, I use Twhirl by Seesmic as a desktop application that can bring up all of the profiles in their own little windows. twhirl is a desktop client for the Twitter microblogging service. Most of the features available on the Twitter website are accessible through twhirl, too.

Twitter Karma

Keeping an eye on your Twitter Karma is a must for anyone that takes Twitter seriously. Twitter Karma is another very simple site that really hasn’t changed much since I first started using it over a year ago. The interface is easy to use and can perform some basic functions.

See everyone you are following and who follows you. More importantly see who you are following that is not following you back or people that follow you and you have not started tracking their updates. With just these few slices of visibility you can select individuals or groups that you can bulk follow or unfollow. This lets you keep a good Twitter follow ratio.

Last but not least by far is Twitter Feed.

Twitter feed serves a very simple task. Any RSS feed can be ported into a Twitter stream. An example of this is any new posts to my blog (like this one) will automatically be added to Twitter. This saves me from having to log into Twiter and post the link myself. sure that’s a very simple process but when you look at other Twitter profiles that update hourly with links or other information you can see where the automation becomes very helpful. Some examples are the Mayor of Concord and HyperLocal Edge Twitter profiles.

FriendFeed aims to be a one stop shop for all your social networking updates and news items. The four founders were all team members at Google and helped to launch such products as Google Maps, Adsense, GMail and Google Groups. They’ve brought their expertise to a slightly different area: social network aggregating.

Users tell the feed which networks they belong to (Facebook, Digg, Last.fm etc) and FriendFeed personalizes your data feed with info from each of the sites.

I’ve had an account for a while and never use it actively. I signed up for the FriendFeed account and plugged in all of my feeds and then left it alone. There were other features such as the ability to comment and share links but I never used them. I started following some other social media icons like mashable,  l0ckergn0me, Jason Calacanis, Chris Brogan, Leo Laporte, and justine, but I never looked at it.  If I wanted to leave a comment, I would do it on the same platform the feed came from and not an aggregator.  There wasn’t a whole lot of activity from other people and it looked like most people did the same as me. Set it and forget it.

Looks like things are changing though. Once a dormant social site that I used only for aggregating my rss feeds has now become a full fledged community. In the past few weeks I have gotten a lot of emails of people subscribing to my feed. Really I think I had 5 people following me last month and now I get comments on my links. Now I find myself digging through FriendFeed profiles the way I do with Twitter.

SOCOM Sales started off as a way for me to blog about my journey as a sales person and has morphed into a blog that covers a bunch of different topics. I was getting such a great responce to the site through comments and emails that I even wrote a Channel Sales Playbook to explain how to run a channel sales team. The e-book is free and there are plans to put together a more detailed and expansive e-book covering channel sales in a very simple format.

SOCOM Sales was my first professional applicationof using social media. Besides having a blog with over 300 posts on sales tips and selling skills, I manage a Twitter profile called Sales tools that has grown to a following over 1000.

Most of that growth has been in the past month. I was happy with the followers before but I figured since I am currently out of work I would spend more time building my sales tools network and using social media to fill my time looking for a new place to work. Getting to know more of my sales tools network has been fun and I have met some very professional sales people through Twitter I never would have known before.

I put together a Facebook page for the site as well. Really I just wanted another Facebook page to test my skills on. Since this is in a different niche that the HyperLocal marketing site, there will be a seperate set of tabs and information that will be broadcast on the SOCOM Sales Facebook page. I need to do some more customization to the fan page but I am gad that I have gotten a few fans already even though a few of them are collegues of mine from work.

I only have a few hundred posts so far but I am getting a far amount of traffic from the area from people looking for news. I setup a Twitter account almost immediately when I started the blog. The Twitter profile is used to share news from the area and I post my blog and some of y local travels on the micro-blog.

The community that has been built continues to surprise me. I get news tips and information from people in the area and people retweet my posts often.

Since this is more of a local twitter profile I guess the idea that I don’t have a ton of followers is acceptable. Actually I am excited to have as many as I do. I have been having a hard time finding local Twitter users and they tend to find me and then I re-follow them.

Yes I even have a Facebook page setup for the Concord blog. I do a bit of targeted advertising on Facebook for the site and the fan page. nothing expensive but I like knowing that other people in Concord and surrounding area can find me on Facebook.

Moore, who was in southern France where her husband, actor Ashton Kutcher, is filming a movie, quickly replied to the threat saying, “Hope you are joking.”

Twitter followers who saw the message tracked it to a San Jose, California, home, where police found a 48-year-old woman. The police took her into custody for a psychological evaluation, according to a police spokesman.

About two hours after the initial exchange, Moore posted this message — known as a “tweet” — on Twitter: “Thanks everyone for reaching out to the San Jose PD i am told they are aware and no need to call anymore. I do not know this woman.”

A San Jose police spokesman said a “concerned citizen” — not Moore or Kutcher — called his department at 4:37 a.m. to report seeing the threat on Twitter.

Police went to the residence that the caller provided and found the woman unharmed but in need of help, Sgt. Ronnie Lopez said.

“We determined she did meet the criteria for a 72-hour psychological evaluation, and she was taken to a hospital for that treatment,” Lopez said.

What is ExecTweets?
