One thing I have noticed over the past year is an increase in the number of people adding some variation of “Social Selling Expert” in their LinkedIn profiles or creating a website that has this highlighted. I don’t presume to think I should know who all of them are but there are a few that I’ve dug a little deeper into and found very little evidence that they are experts or have contributed much in the domain of Social SellingSo I am wondering if social selling is just being used as a buzz word or something different than my interpretation

I thought I’d bring the question to Twitter and see if anyone had insights to this. There were many people that had comments about the rise in numbers. Do you agree with them?

What do you think?

  9. It was bound to happen. I think that those of us who have been doing this for some years now simply need to keep setting the bar higher.

Koka – it is a bummer to see people proclaim themselves as experts even when it is clear that their social networks and experience don’t make up their claims.

I hear ya Barb. I guess the same thing happened when social media first hit the tipping point too. Everyone seemed to be an expert in social media and within a few years the real experts well known and everyone else had to accept it. I guess the same will be true with ‘social selling’ in the years to come.

  11. It just means that social selling has reached critical mass. My Paper.li on the subject has gone from one issue every few days to an issue a day (mostly filled with Koka’s posts!)

So the bandwagon-jumpers will jump, and it will remain to be seen how many can be helpful.

In the meantime, since we know it works, and since LinkedIn is releasing extremely cool tools to enable it, I’d say the social selling wave is beginning to build.

  14. To me it looks a lot more like social prospecting. Most reps are still stuck in email trying to battle there message to the top of an inbox. Salespeople need to find a differentiated approach and find places to engage with their clients. I love reading Barb and Koka’s blogs because they seem to be innovators that are tapping new technology, and moving sales as a science forward.
