Using Twitter for a Cause

Thanksgiving is wonderful. Not much beats getting around the family and friends and stuffing yourself full of turkey and cranberry sauce. In the end, Thanksgiving is all about giving. I was going to just re-tweet this information since I found it from a person I was following but after digging in a bit with the TweetsGiving site and what Epic Change is all about, I felt it was worth writing something more substantial up in support of them.

Epic Change believes that people’s stories are assets that can be used as resources to improve their lives. We help people in need share their “epic” true stories in innovative, creative and profitable ways to help them acquire the financial resources they need to create positive “change” in their communities.

I understand that many people think “We need schools and money for things in America.”. Yes we do, but if that’s where you would rather donate your money then there are many places you can do that. TweetsGiving is raising money for kids that really have nothing in comparison to us and all they need are 1000 bricks to build a new school.

Tweetsgiving is a project of Epic Change that seeks to demonstrate the power of twitter and the social web by spreading gratitude and raising $10,000 in 48 hours to build a classroom at the school in Tanzania. The project was inspired by the TrickorTweet campaign organized around Halloween by @TheGrok and @ChrisBrogan and by this “thank you” post.

Epic Change is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that uses the power of stories to create social change. Our current project is to rebuild and expand Shepherds Junior, a primary school in Arusha, Tanzania. Mama Lucy Kamptoni, a savvy and passionate local woman, started the school near her home in 2003 with the money she raised from selling chickens. She believes that education is the key to transforming a country gripped by poverty. By participating in TweetsGiving, you’re investing in the education and future of students like Gideon, Pius, Glory, and many more who have the potential to change the world. All the funds raised will go to build a new classroom at the school.

I do a few cancer walks a year and was looking for a way to get the word out there a little bit more. I am just kind of new to twitter but it’s a great idea to start using that to get the word out. My mind is perculating with ideas now.
